Data Security Breach at Anthem Compromises Personal Information

Anthem, which administers many of Verizon’s health care benefits in the U.S., was the target of a sophisticated cyber attack causing a major data security breach. Anthem has advised Verizon that personal information was exposed for about 80 million of its customers and employees.

Safeguarding your private information is a top priority for Verizon and we are working closely with Anthem to understand the extent of the impact this breach may have had to Verizon employees.

At this time, Anthem believes the breach did not compromise any personal medical information or any financial information like credit cards or bank accounts. Anthem has indicated that personal information was compromised, including names, birthdays, medical IDs/social security numbers, street and email addresses. While Anthem is reporting that employment information including income data also was compromised, your income data was not accessed as Verizon does not provide that information to Anthem.

Anthem will individually notify all of its members whose data were accessed, and will be providing credit monitoring and identity protection services to those members free of charge.

We are monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed. Anthem has set up a website and a toll free number 1-877-263-7995 to answer customers’ questions regarding this incident.
