Contract Extension Ratification Results

Today the IBEW Local 827 Statewide Election Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson, along with the Unit Election Officers counted and certified the results of the Verizon New Jersey, Verizon Connected Solutions and Verizon Pennsylvania contract extension ratification voting. 

The membership of Verizon New Jersey and Verizon Pennsylvania overwhelmingly approved the ratification of their respective contract extensions.

The vote total for the Verizon Connected Solutions contract extension resulted in a tie, therefore the contract extension ratification election will be rerun.  Details to follow.

NJ Governor signs unemployment bill into law!

IBEW Local 827 is proud to announce that today, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed into law bill A-3861/S-1046.  This new law will provide unemployment insurance payments, after a 30 day waiting period, to union members that are out of work as a result of a labor dispute with their employer.  This law is the strongest in the nation and New Jersey is one of only three states to offer this protection for its unionized workers.

2018 Ratification Meeting Information

The following are the dates for the Verizon and VCS contract ratification meetings.  Please attend a meeting for an explanation of the contract and to vote.  You can vote at any one of the meetings throughout the state listed below where your contract is being discussed. 

For out-of-hour tours, you will be able to vote at your unit office ONLY on the date of your unit meeting between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Please provide a copy of your schedule to your Business Agent and/or Chief Steward at the time of out-of-hour voting.

Verizon Bargaining Update! 4 Year Contract Extension Details!

Local 827 is pleased to announce the extension of the 2016 contract. The new 2018 MOU provides for a 4 year contract extension which will take the current contract out through Aug 5, 2023.

We are pleased to see that our relationship with Verizon has improved greatly since our historic 2016 strike of 49 days.  This contract provides an 11.2% raise compounded over the term of the extension. With this extension we continue the good paying, middle class jobs that we have fought to preserve. A statewide stewards meeting will be held on July 31, 2018 with ratification meetings to be held in each unit. All dates for ratification meetings will be posted to the web, as well as the mailings to member’s homes next week. Please attend any ratification meeting for a full explanation of the contract extension.

Bargaining Update

CWA, IBEW and Verizon  have reached an agreement in principle to extend the collective bargaining agreements for a four-year period. The current agreements are set to expire on August 3, 2019. If finalized, the agreements will extend through August 5, 2023.  The company and the unions are documenting the understanding in signed contracts and expect to have that completed this week, at which time we will communicate further details.  

The contracts will be subject to ratification by union members.  We will keep you posted.


Important Update!

A message from Local 827 President Speer:  The rumors are spreading on social media that there is an agreement for a Verizon contract extension. Do not believe the rumors. I have not signed off on any extension. The only place you should look for official information is on  our website and the IBEW Local 827 Facebook page 

Bargaining Update

As you already know, CWAIBEWand  Verizon began meeting for a two-week period to attempt to negotiate the terms of a possible extension to the collective bargaining agreements that are set to expire in August 2019.   We have agreed with the Company to extend the negotiations for a few additional days after the holiday.  Meetings are expected to resume in the middle of next week. 

We will provide additional updates as appropriate.

Our Campaign
Our Heat Illness Prevention campaign, launched in 2011, educates employers
and workers on the dangers of working in the heat. Through training
sessions, outreach events, informational sessions, publications, social media
messaging and media appearances, millions of workers and employers have
learned how to protect workers from heat. Our safety message comes down to
three key words: Water. Rest. Shade.
Dangers of Working in the Heat
Every year, dozens of workers die and thousands more become ill while
working in extreme heat or humid conditions. More than 40 percent of heatrelated
worker deaths occur in the construction industry, but workers in
every field are susceptible. There are a range of heat illnesses and they can
affect anyone, regardless of age or physical condition.
Employer Responsibility to Protect Workers
Under OSHA law, employers are responsible for providing workplaces free of
known safety hazards. This includes protecting workers from extreme heat.
An employer with workers exposed to high temperatures should establish a
complete heat illness prevention program.
Provide workers with water, rest and shade.
Allow new or returning workers to gradually increase workloads and
take more frequent breaks as they acclimatize, or build a tolerance for
working in the heat.
Plan for emergencies and train workers on prevention.
Monitor workers for signs of illness.

heat illness, adapting to working in indoor and outdoor heat, protecting
workers, recognizing symptoms, and first aid training. The page also includes
